| My cousin Captain Kathy Mazza was a Port Authority Police Officer who sacrificed her life in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. She touched my life and the lives of her family and friends with her unique loving personality. Kathy also touched the lives of every American by willingly giving her life in her efforts to save others during the terrorist attack. On November 17, 2001 the Suffolk County, Nassau County, Manhattan, Port Authority and Newark Police Departments conducted a memorial service in her honor, over two thousand people attended, including Mayor Giuliani. In his speech he attested to the fact of Kathy's courage under fire. Captain Kathy Mazza's quick thinking allowed hundreds of trapped people to be evacuated when she shot out the floor to ceiling glass walls that caused a bottle-kneck at the revolving doors in the mezzinine of Tower 1. An operating room nurse for 10 years before she became a police officer, Kathy stayed behind to tend to the wounded... minutes later the tower collapsed.
